I asked an official of one of the nine Vatican congregations
why Rome has not been more forthcoming and helpful in dealing
with the problem of sexual abuse in the United States. I received
a clear response: "The Vatican does not understand America.
Rome does not understand why the American Bishops cannot control
the media and the courts." I am assured that Ireland and
Italy are prominent among the areas where bishops are in control.
